Kia Ray concept

Kia has unveiled the Ray concept at the Chicago Auto Show.

Kia has unveiled the Ray concept at the Chicago Auto Show. Designed to showcase the Korean automaker's environmentally efficient initiatives, the plug-in hybrid concept – said to be 'a bold new collaboration between design and engineering' – has been built using lightweight and recycled materials.

Based on the Kia Forte platform, the Ray features clean, flush surfaces devoid of unnecessary edges giving the four-seat sedan a flowing profile with a pronounced rear shoulder leading to a high deck for reduced drag. A one-piece integrated underbody panel, custom-designed narrow tires and flush wheel design also enhance its aerodynamic attributes. Measuring 4400mm in length, the Ray is 1850mm wide and 1360mm tall and has a 2700mm-long wheelbase.

Inside, a hexagon/honeycomb shape has been used throughout the cabin to reduce overall weight. The seat frames – mounted on the sills to create a floating effect – are made of composites and feature breathable elastomeric materials, while sustainable trim materials combine with a touch screen instrument layout. Hexagonal solar cells embedded in the glass roof panel power the lighting and climate control systems.
