The Subaru Viziv previews a forthcoming crossover vehicle from the Japanese manufacturer, which is celebrating its 55th anniversary this year. At just over four meters in overall length, the compact two-door provides space for four adults in its condensed cabin.

Subaru design cues are visible in the forward canted grille but the exterior design is an otherwise refreshing in its simplicity. Full surfaces dominate the profile while butterfly doors and boomerang-shaped head- and taillamps lend a concept car touch to the aesthetic. The shallow glasshouse and black-colored rocker panel add a sense of sportiness to the design as well, subtracting visual weight from the bodyside.

The Viziv sources power from a plug-in hybrid system that combines a 2.0-litre Subaru Boxer diesel engine and three electric motors. The front motor provides both vehicle drive and power generation, and two independent rear motors give the car enable the all wheel traction Subaru is reputable for.

Importantly, this system frees up cabin space, as the motor-driven rear wheels eliminate the need for a propeller shaft creating a lower floor that benefits legroom for rear seat occupants. The interior is well laid out and bathed in blue light and trim accents. There’s also a bit of gadgetry in the form of displays on the passenger side instrument panel and monitors in the back of the front headrests to keep rear seat occupants entertained.

The two-door four-seater not only showcases a new design aesthetic for Subaru as well as its intent to enter into a segment it doesn’t yet have a presence, but it also previews an innovative plug-in hybrid powertrain, pointing the way towards a future vehicle from Subaru in this growing segment.
