A rolling backpack converts super compact cars into vehicles for virtually any purpose

To drive forward the economic breakthrough of the ‘Dock+Go’ vehicle concept, management consulting firm A.T. Kearney has developed a flexible business concept. The ‘Dock+Go’ solution by design think tank Rinspeed readies super compact cars for flexible uses by simply attaching a 'rolling backpack' to the car. Among other benefits, this also improves the driving range of the car – a major issue with e-vehicles. The business model, which has been tailored to this solution, comprises three key elements: target group specific vehicle combinations, the use of existing automotive architectures and adaptation to the individual mobility requirements of customers.

Modular mobility system ‘Dock+Go’ solves space problems by attaching so-called single axle 'Packs' to the vehicle. Thanks to this addition, users can quickly and simply expand the available payload of their cars. The required production volumes for cost effective manufacturing could be reached in two and a half years, provided all potential markets are utilized. A.T. Kearney has developed its lean business model for this specific purpose.

Pizza delivery service vehicle converts into camper in just five minutes

One of the integral elements of this model is the possibility to offer a variety of vehicle concepts, which can be combined with each other in just five minutes. Different 'Packs' – for instance versions with an integrated hot food preserver box or tool box – turn a Smart Car into the perfect delivery vehicle for pizza delivery services or craftsmen. Hobby athletes and campers can now expand the uses of their super compact cars by adding a 'rolling backpack' for their camping, skiing or golfing equipment. Based on evidence gathered in recent customer surveys, the spectrum of potential user groups is vast indeed.

Modular concept cuts development costs

In order to ensure that the concept is cost effective, economies of scale also have to be applied. One of the fundamental requirements is the use of an existing vehicle architecture, such as the Smart Car. This ensures that the fixed development and production costs can be reduced to the essential levels.
The basic version of the car always comes with an electric drive. The docking 'energy Pack' allows users to expand the range of the e-vehicle, either by adding another combustion engine, an extra battery or by using a third axle to recycle the energy generated when braking.

Usage tailored to needs

Given the diverse usage options, services have to be tailored specifically to the needs of each individual customer. “The lump sum cost should be designed for the respective customer uses and should be budget priced,” observes Steffen Gänzle, member of the Automotive Practice Unit at A.T. Kearney.

“Dock & Go” offers the most promising business opportunities for car sharing and rental operations models. As a result, an entire series of different intelligent vehicle and 'Pack' concepts is being developed that are designed to be combined with flexible pay-per-use modalities,” explains Gänzle. Obviously, the program also targets private individuals. They will be able to either purchase or lease the 'Packs' or use the pay-per-use system as an alternative.
